Portman is very famous in the region for its "black"beach. The roads along the coast are reasonably quiet and this through road is nice and wide. From La Union, the road climbs up to the coast. It is a good idea to break your climb and turn right for a drink on the beach, then go back up to the main road and don't accelerate too much because the steep part is still to come! Because the road is wide it doesn't look that steep but your legs will be screaming otherwise. Once at ... read more

It is a good idea to break your climb and turn right for a drink on the beach, then go back up to the main road and don't accelerate too much because the steep part is still to come! Because the road is wide it doesn't look that steep but your legs will be screaming otherwise. Once at the top, descent towards the golfing mecca of La Manga and find a beach bar for a cup of coffee! In the summer months, it is very hot here, so keep an eye on your fluid intake. The photos are taken from Portman beach, they give a good impression of the difference in height between La Union and the sea.
