This climb was part of the Giro d'Italia in 2013. the name Altopiano is just the last steep bit and popularly known as the Selle Nevea. A popular ski area for Italians and Austrians who want something different.
The climb is not very tough, although the overview does not indicate that as soon as you cross the little river you immediately have 10% rise.
Italian passes are built fairly randomly, not with the finesse of the French ones by Napoleon. It goes up and down and you drive through and gorge as it were towards the abandoned ski village.
No special end point for a photo but a reasonably gentle climb where you can test your legs well, start in Tarvisio and you go downhill to Chuisaforte, after the descent you come to the blue-green lake of Predil and you can continue downhill to Tarvisio or climb a bit more to Slovenia.
There are several climbs to the left and right of the SS13 ( Pontebana) so you can connect different loops to get to extreme altimeters without breaking your legs ( avoid the Zoncolan, though).
