Amongst us local cyclists, this one is often regarded as the toughest in the Lake District. Only short, but as with many climbs in the UK, what makes them so tough are the short sections where they are far steeper than the average over 100 metres suggests. This climb has sections well over 25% which are unavoidable - so not just on the inside of the hairpins. The real challenge here is that there is no rest once you get onto the top half. The tarmac has off-camber sections, loose gravel, stutter bumps and streams of water across the road even in the summer.
A nice climb that starts fairly gently and then gets very steep, really raking until a few hundred metres before the top. The percentages on very short bits are even a bit higher (25% says the sign), good to practise sur place standing on the pedals. Anyway, the hills in the Lake District are tough, the roads often choose the shortest way up.... Road surface fine, very narrow though so if you meet a car on a very steep section it does get tricky to navigate. Beautiful scenery with nice views at the top if the weather permits... Climbed this col in a tour of the Lake District with several such gut-busters.
