Despite being about 30 km from home, I had not yet found the courage to tackle it again... We are in Alto Vergante, the hilly area suspended between the Piedmont shore of Lake Maggiore and the slopes of Mottarone. The climb from Tapigliano to the upper part of Fosseno (incidentally two hamlets in the municipality of Nebbiuno) is one of those surprises that can catch even the most experienced cyclists accustomed to "extreme" gradients unprepared: the numbers are quite explicit. In 1.15 km you face 160 m d+ with an average gradient of 13.8%. But the figure is distorted by the first part up to the exit from the historic village, which is also well documented by the video in which the tough part begins in the 4th minute
In reality, the next 450m (almost to the top) claim a difference in altitude of 95m d+ for an average gradient of 20.3%...
The numbers don't talk and lie... there is little you can do about it: this climb must be tackled with due training and the appropriate means in terms of gears. The hard section gives no respite until the end and seems endless, the bike feels like a horse that keeps rearing up and forcing you to adopt the classic MTB posture with further expenditure of energy, and being out of the saddle can lead to lack of lucidity to the point of exhaustion...
For those who manage to turn around during the ascent, they will be able to enjoy the superb view of the southern part of Lake Maggiore... otherwise you can always stop, with the caveat that restarting on those slopes will not be easy, even though the road is quite wide and the traffic is almost non-existent.
The ascent for filming starts at Via Novara in Tapigliano (from the junction with the Alto Vergante provincial road) and continues along Via Dei Boschi and Via Erbuiera. It is not easy to find, but it has also been documented with the street view tool. It's also possible to ascend via Case Sparse Colli Fioriti, but the "infernal" incipit is lost...
