The longest of the 4 possible climbing routes to Verrogne cycled September 2024.
You start via the busy Great St Bernard route to climb out of Aosta via the first hairpin bends. At the roundabout, turn left for a long fairly straight uphill road, with which the city sinks below you, with a lot less traffic.
A few hairpin bends bring you to Arpuilles where you cycle loose through the village centre past the little church.
The whole route follows the northern flank of the Aosta valley.
Mostly slightly winding stretches interrupted by a few hairpins to continue parallel to the valley at a higher level through small villages with a few houses.
Wonderful views of greater Aosta with the river and the route towards Courmayeur/Mont Blanc tunnel and the snow-capped peaks of the Gran Paradiso National Park peeking over the southern flank on the other side.
There is a welcome descending section after 10km of climbing although of course you have to pay for it afterwards to regain the lost altitude.
End point is modest village with church and water source.

practical:
hardly any traffic,
little shade,
variable asphalt quality but nowhere very bad,
you can use the other routes to the same end point to descend again.
little provisioning.

Long beautiful climb following the Aosta valley westwards on the valley flank!
