The first part of the ascent to Monte Fumaiolo is a wide road that never gives an idea of the real gradients. Traffic is almost non-existent, as is life around the road. There are only small agglomerations of two or three houses, kilometres apart. Balze is the only village worth mentioning, from which you turn right and attack the last four kilometres of ascent. These are the toughest parts, 8, 9 and 10% with tougher bits.
You pedal through the forest, the weather cools down and you reach the top of the two refuges where you can refresh yourself amiably.
The descent towards Acquapartita is a beautiful descent, too bad for the asphalt that is sometimes really good and sometimes really bad. A few kilometres from the summit of Fumaiolo there should be a cippo del Pirata (milestone of the Pirate), too bad that it is not signposted and that it has been resoundingly smoothed over.
