Unfortunately, I made the climb on a very overcast day, so I didn't see much of the scenery! The surface is pretty good for the whole of the climb, and there is very little traffic. The hardest part is the first 3 kilometres through the forest. After that, the climb is along the ridge. I'd imagine you'll have some lovely views, and you'll come across quite a few animals. The hardest part is the first 3 kilometres through the forest. After that, the climb is along the ridge. I'd imagine you'll have some lovely views, and you'll come across quite a few animals. You arrive at the tiny resort of Val d'Ese at a car park, which isn't very charming, but the few stone houses are reminiscent of Alpine hamlets. The descent is fairly fast, so watch out for animals waiting for you on the bends!

The climb begins very hard in the undergrowth with regular but complicated gradients (especially as to get here you must already have a good outing under your belt, at least if you're coming from the seaside!) As you leave the woods, the view opens up and the gradients are less steep, but still regular, and gradually you get a fine view all the way to the sea, and on the other side to the picturesque village of Bastelica.
The road is in good condition, with little traffic, and we're lucky enough to come across donkeys, cows and, of course, pigs...
The arrival itself isn't quite what you'd expect: it's a simple ski resort car park, with no altitude sign. There's an altitude restaurant open in the summer too, but we didn't try it. We preferred to eat at CHEZ PAUL in Bastelica on the way down, and I recommend it!
The descent is very pleasant because the road runs along the ridge, so visibility is good and there's hardly any traffic, so you can drive without being scared!
