A great climb that needs to be divided into two parts: 1. to Donadivo: steep but constant ascent through the forest 2. to Bodengo: irregular gradients, but a beautiful stretch where you almost forget that you're going uphill. With a gravel bike, you can also continue to Corte Terza, a beautiful little Alpine settlement.

One of many climbing routes on the western flank of the wide Mera river valley just outside Chiavenna cycled June 2025.
You start through the residential area of Gordona with the first hairpin bends. At the road narrowing you cycle into the shadow of the forest, there is hardly any traffic and habitation, but the percentages become several kilometres
+ 10 pct.
Halfway there is flattening and in the final section the road runs beautifully above deep river gorge via semi-open galleries along steep rock faces and a long bridge over it. Last kilometres, the mountain river reappears right next to the road until the terminus in Bodengo with houses around a little church surrounded by high mountain peaks.
You can continue climbing and cycling for another 500m but that's where the tarmac stops for good.

Practical:
Varying road surface quality but nowhere disastrous.
Food and drink at the start and some springs along the way.
Gordona can be reached traffic-free via the Ciclabile della Valchiavenna (arrowed cycle path between Lake Como and Switzerland).

Very nice climb with very spicy start and and pure mountain nature ending!!!
