The start of the climb out of Pately Bridge is lovely as you cycle along with the water to your right. The gradient is undulating but nothing hard. Then out of Lofthouses the gradient ramps up really quickly to prove a stern test of the legs. Once you crest the top cycle on towards Masham where you are treated to some great countryside and some good places to stop. Johnny Baghdad’s cafe in the market square serves excellent food and drinks.
