The climb starts in the village and passes beautiful Ardennes houses to end up in the forest a little after going out of the village. On a hot day like I cycled it, the shelter of the forest is lovely. The climb is somewhat irregular. If, like me, you want to maintain your own leisurely pace, that tempo change is a thing. The length is indeed an assassin, every time you think you are there, but then it goes on again. Nice climb, be sure to take it if you are in the area.
De klim start in het dorp en loopt langs prachtige Ardense huizen om even na het uitgaan van het dorp in het bos te belanden. Op een warme dag zoals ik hem fietste is de beschutting van het bos heerlijk. De klim is wat onregelmatig. Als je zoals ik een eigen rustig tempo wilt vasthouden is dat tempowisselen wel een dingetje. De lengte is inderdaad een sluipmoordenaar, elke keer denk je dat je er bent, maar dan gaat-ie toch weer verder. Mooie klim, zeker meepakken als je in de buurt bent.
For more than four kilometres, the elongated Rue de Saint-Hubert presents the Ardennes as we know it from postcards. The first part takes the cyclist through the hamlet of Lavacherie (literally "cowshed") past old farm houses that have almost without exception been renovated to such an extent that they probably look even more Ardennes-like than they once did. In the second and most beautiful part of the ascent, introduced by a small refuge and the last houses of the village, the rather wide road between coniferous and deciduous trees meanders further towards Saint-Hubert. The advantage of the deteriorating road surface is that you are not bothered by motorised traffic, which allows you to find the best track in peace. The possible difficulty of this slope lies in its length, but calling it an assassin would be too much honour, there are too many false flat sections to catch your breath.
Ruim vier kilometer lang schotelt de langgerekte Rue de Saint-Hubert ons de Ardennen voor zoals we het kennen van de ansichtkaarten. Het eerste gedeelte voert de fietser door het gehucht Lavacherie (letterlijk “koeienstal”) langs oude hoevewoningen die bijna zonder uitzondering dermate gerenoveerd zijn dat ze er allicht nog Ardeenser uitzien dan ze er ooit hebben uitgezien. In het tweede en mooiste deel van de beklimming, ingeluid door een vluchtheuveltje en de laatste huizen van het dorp, meandert de tamelijk brede baan tussen naald- en loofbomen verder richting Saint-Hubert. Het voordeel van het verslechterende wegdek is dat je er geen last hebt van gemotoriseerd verkeer, waardoor je in alle rust het beste spoor kan zoeken. De mogelijke moeilijkheid van deze helling schuilt in de lengte, maar hem een sluipmoordenaar noemen zou teveel eer zijn, daarvoor zijn er teveel stukjes vals plat om op adem te komen.
