The climb follows the D439 towards Frankenbourg, then onto a forest road. The entire route is in the shade and in the forest. The road surface is fine, but a little bumpy. The road is narrow and almost deserted. You will hardly encounter any vehicles; just the odd stray hiker...
After about 2 km of climbing, the slope presents several hectometres at 10% or even more. The rest of the slope is steady (8 to 9%) with a flat spot two-thirds of the way up. The "pass" is 150m below the castle, which cannot be seen.
This fairly strenuous climb is not very interesting, apart from discovering new, isolated routes.
The descent on this side is safer than the southern road down to Lièpvre (which is in fairly poor condition).
