Once you've reached the Col de Saint Barnabé, don't skip this cute little climb up to the Stade de neige.
The road is good. The climb is short but very pleasant.
At the top, you're at an altitude of 1700m, and outside the ski season, it's a strange end of the world, a no-man's-land.
Just this formidable peeled mountain...
And the wind! This wind that tries its hardest to bring down the ski lifts from another era. Far West atmosphere.
A must! 4 stars for the special atmosphere.
Ambiance far west.
À faire ! 4 étoiles pour l’atmosphère particulière.
At the top of St Barnabé, you can climb to the 250-metre-high ski station. The self-service restaurant would only be open during the winter season. Barren mountains, ideal for ski slopes, covered with grass.... ideal for the hundreds of sheep I saw there. I had a conversation with one of the shepherds about the many wolves in the area. Hence my abnormal climbing time. Be careful: Don't get too close to the herd... the guard dogs are very alert. With a good mtb or gravel bike, you could cross the forest to Le Touyet and Ubraye to get to the Col de Laval. Whether it's doable on a road bike I don't dare say.
Climb which ends in the small ski station Vauplane. Some extra height meters from the Col de Saint-Barnabé for those who want. It can be chilly, a jacket for the descent is useful.
