Smalldean is notorious locally, and people tend to exaggerate the steepness. However it definitely pushes 18％ for a short stretch and is definitely explosion territory. It's useful as link across the A4010 and sometimes you have to take it on because of that. There are some nice views on the lead in.

There is a undulating lead in from the main road then shortly after you pass the National Trust car park it hits you. Although the climb is not long, it has some of the steepest gradients around in the Chilterns, so get it your bottom gear stand up and fight until it eases off after the right hand bend at the top.
