Really quiet road next to a beautiful river set among the mountains, a few tough sections at the beginning but then a regular quiet climb. Poor road surface here and there (by Austrian standards anyway) but repairs had been done in many places. So no problem. Highly recommended versus the alternatives in the region (Katchbergstrasse or Via Turracher Hohe) if you need to go south or north.... read more

Highly recommended versus the alternatives in the region (Katchbergstrasse or Via Turracher Hohe) if you need to go south or north.

If you come into the Lungau valley from the Tauern pass you have a couple of options to travel further south.
Over the terrible Wurzenpas, direction A10 and then along the highway or you go left and direction Innerkrems.

The Schonfeldsattel is an unknown route, it ends at the Dr Josef Mehrl hut. If you leave the main road it is immediately hard work, 10% plus is participating in this piece of asphalt and once you're past this you go downhill for a while, mind you you get a junction and if you keep right you have a big detour.
You can get back on the pedals and the narrow road indicates that there is not much traffic to be expected.
If you have seen the Heidi movies you immediately recognize where the image of Austria comes from. You cross a wild grid and a huge sign that says Nur Alm! marks another world.
A road that winds its way through the fields, correcting alpine meadows, a stream rippling through it and the blond cows, with bells, walking here and there.
I can just stroke them from my bike.
The road keeps on climbing and although there are no views it is a pleasure to ride.
You can eat and drink in the hut or go a little further to Innerkrems and stop here for a ski break.
Note that the descent to Innerkrems is not yet restored and is the worst road in Austria melted and ripped open as a result of a hot summer followed by a huge amount of snow in the winter.
I rode over it but needed my MTB skills.
Afterwards you can choose to descend towards Gmund or continue 35 km over 2 summits via the Nockalmstrasse!
