Great climb - the first part is fairly steep, although I don't find this part that difficult. Then turn left and you see the wall looming: last 300m is very steep and takes forever. You can take some speed for this last part, so it's mainly the last 100m that hurts the most. The first section is not ideal in terms of road surface though (with some pebbles, some potholes, some mud), but for climbing this is not bad. If you encounter a car driving down, it's a bit of a squeeze, but it's just appropriate. It remains a true classic though, so these things you should definitely overcome: you have to do this one!
Geweldige beklimming - het eerste stuk is redelijk steil, al vind ik dit gedeelte nog niet zo lastig. Vervolgens links opdraaien en dan zie je de muur opdoemen: laatste 300m is zeer steil en duurt eindeloos. Je kunt wel wat snelheid nemen voor dit laatste deel, dus het is vooral de laatste 100m die het meest pijn doet. Het eerste stuk is wel niet ideaal qua wegdek (met wat steentjes, wat putjes, wat modder), maar voor te klimmen is dit niet erg. Als je een auto tegenkomt die naar beneden rijdt, is het wat wringen, maar het is juist gepast. Het blijft wel een echte klassieker, dus deze zaken moet je zeker overwinnen: deze moet je doen!

It starts out easy, However, after that you get into a twisty irregular climb. In the profile it says somewhere a max of 20％, I am not sure about this, I think the steepest was at the end anyway. Maybe measured somewhere in a bend? Once you get into the steeper sections, however, there is no stopping until the top. The end is just dying until you suddenly find yourself at the stone road and have to choose between descending left, continuing up the hotond on the right or crossing and plopping down on the brasserie terrace.

Hidden gem in the Flemish Ardennes and unfortunately too little known, ends at the top of the Hotond at the old mill where you always see many cyclists, however on the Schapenberg itself never another cyclist encountered. A pity, because this is a fantastic climb and very hard, especially the last hectares through the forest on the narrow asphalt road of the Riekestraat where it gets extremely steep. Already done it a few times with the recumbent which is no sinecure because of the enormous gradient, it gives a very satisfying feeling when you reach the top.
Verborgen parel in de Vlaamse Ardennen en jammer genoeg te weinig gekend, komt uit boven op de Hotond aan de oude molen waar je altijd veel wielertoeristen ziet, echter op de Schapenberg zelf nog nooit een andere fietser tegengekomen. Spijtig, want dit is een fantastische klim en bijzonder zwaar, zeker de laatste hectometers door het bos over de smalle asfaltweg van de Riekestraat waar het extreem steil wordt. Reeds enkele malen gedaan met de ligfiets wat vanwege het enorme stijgingspercentage geen sinecure is, het geeft dan ook een zeer volkomen gevoel wanneer je op de top staat.
Certainly worthwhile to do. Maybe on the heavy side for a starting cyclist, but very nice for someone who likes to avoid a steep climb with some rhythm changes.
Zeker de moeite om eens te doen. Misschien aan de zware kant voor een beginnend fietser maar enorm fijn voor iemand die graag afziet om een stijl klimmetje met wat ritmeveranderingen.

Very nice climb which can be felt very hard in the legs towards the end to the big track. The last part of the climb you will be exhausted if you use the short descent in the middle of the climb as a breather. Covered by the forest, it's time to stop thinking and to pedal until the last meters.
Zeer mooie klim die tegen het einde naar de grote baan toch zeer hard in de benen gevoeld kan worden. Het laatste deel raak je toch wel op als je het korte stukje afdaling in het midden van de klim als adempauze gebruikt. Overdekt door het bos is het verstand op nul en stoempen tot de laatste meters.

qua profiel lijkt deze klim veel op de Mur van Huy zeg! en dat in de Vlaamse Ardennen!
Very nice climb, about 100 meters after the S-curve you get a taste of what's to come.... After a less steep part, the real work starts, with the centre of gravity at the front of the forest. I ride up the Riekestraat about 30 times a year and rarely see any fellow cyclists here. Quite an underrated road.
zeer mooie klim, een 100- tal meter na de S bocht krijgt een voorproefje van wat komen gaat.... Na een minder stijl stukje, begint het echte werk, met het zwaartepunt vooraan in het bos. Ik rijd de Riekestraat een 30-tal keer per jaar op en zie hier zelden een collega wielertoerist. Behoorlijk ondergewaardeerd dus.

Nice alternative (slightly less difficult) via Bierlinkstraat and Schapenberg. Slope is (both variants) also called schapenberg.
1 remark, the height profile on this site is not fully correct, in the middle part is a flat part (even slightly descending) just before the steep part in the woods ...
Inderdaad een zeer mooie helling. Recent gereden, een laag prachtig asfalt en prachtig uitzicht.
Mooi alternatief (iets minder lastig dan ook) via Bierlinkstraat en Schapenberg. Helling wordt ( beide varianten) ook wel schapenberg genoemd.
1 opmerking, het hoogteprofiel op deze site is niet volledig juist, in het middendeel zit een vlak deel ( zelfs licht dalend) net voor het steile deel in het bos...

Afgelopen weekend voor het eerst op gefietst en er zullen vast en zeker nog meerdere keren volgen.
Wanneer je in het begin te hard van start gaat betaal je dat op het einde dubbel en dwars terug!
Je kan jezelf helemaal leegtrekken, prachtig!
Voor mij de mooiste beklimming tot nu toe!
