A very interesting climb with false flat first 10km then thereafter: it’s brutal with 11% ramps and short flat bits, always turning and twisting on a narrow single lane road. it would have been great but unfortunately drizzle at the start of ride turned into rain. saw nothing but fog and rain at the top this morning (21/9/24).
Climbed in the dark. The climb is very irregular and thus very difficult. The road surface is quite fine. There is a wild grid towards the end though, you really don't want to fall over that.
Monstrously tough mountain, which you must have done!
Forget Rocacorba, this is Girona region's best climb!
Starts off flattish with a relatively straight road on a really good surface, never steep but getting your legs working. Once it starts to ramp up then it's brutal in places; there's a lot of sections that are exposed to the sun so it feels hot as hell (even in October), so any shade is welcome. Loads of very narrow, twisty corners but thankfully hardly any traffic on the day we did it as a group of 8. Road surface is generally good but it's not fresh tarmac.
Once it kicks up to 7% avg then it doesn't really relent, aside from the flatter part past some ruins before it go back up to 8-10% when it turns into a balcony road as you reach the last 1km.
The views are astounding and once you go through the rock and finish up at the monastry, you can see across the Pyrenees. A truly breathtaking climb. Tapas at the top was most welcome.
Piece of advice, if you take the descent to Besalu it's a VERY steep, winding and gravelly road so take care
