Samnaun, tax-free village between Austria and Switzerland. Ski village and cheap fuel. During my first visit to the Stelvio, I drove by and the route from Austria is nice enough for a time trial was the idea.
The approach through the villages and along the river is nice, fairly flat and beautiful views. In my memory, it was about 2 km steep and the rest between 5 and 8％ .
Once in the climb, you notice that in the car you have a completely different perception of climbing.... It was just 6 km of hard work. Photo 3 is on a piece of 14％ and it was also 25+ so fighting against gravity.
I hadn't registered that it was 15 kilometres in total, but the climb is very nice after it flattens out a bit. You ride between high mountain ridges and climb steadily to the small rustic tax haven.
For me the opportunity to have a delicious plate of käsespatzle and then I can relax for an hour. A little shopping and then it's downhill. Beautiful road, mind you it can be busy during weekends or holiday periods so choose your day carefully.
Samnaun, belastingvrij dorp tussen Oostenrijk en Zwitserland. Skidorp en goedkoop tanken. Tijdens mijn eerste bezoek aan de Stelvio even langs gereden en de route vanuit Oostenrijk is wel mooi genoeg voor een tijdrit was het idee.
De aanloop door de dorpen en langs de rivier is mooi, redelijk vlak en mooie uitzichten. In mijn herinnering was het een kilometer of 2 steil en de rest tussen de 5 en 8％ .
Eenmaal in de klim merk je dat je in de auto toch een heel andere perceptie hebt van stijging.... het was gewoon 6 kilometer afzien. Foto 3 is op een stuk van 14％ en het was ok nog een 25+ dus vechten tegen de zwaartekracht.
Dat het 15 kilometer in totaal was had ik ook niet geregistreerd maar niettemin is de klim nadat hij een beetje afvlakt erg mooi. Je rijdt tussen hoge bergruggen en klimt gestaag naar het kleine rustieke belastingparadijs.
Voor mij de kans op een heerlijk bordje käsespatzle en dan kan ik ik rustig een uurtje afzien. Nog even shoppen en dan naar beneden knallen. Mooie weg, let wel het kan druk zijn tijdens weekend dagen of vakantie perioden dus kies je dag zorgvuldig.
