A nice climb. At the bottom you ride through fields and the road here is still a bit poor. This does improve as you get higher. In my case, there was a lot of fog that day. So don't forget your jacket. Gloves can also come in handy, as it can be nasty cold on top in summer. You probably won't meet anyone. The scenery is very beautiful despite the fog. On a sunny day, the views must be fabulous.
Watch out on the descent, which is pretty mediocre in terms of tarmac and there are herds of sheep and goats walking around guarded by mountain dogs. Those mountain dogs, by the way, are alert to people without being aggressive. They bark, but that seems to be a mutual communication system and not directed at the cyclist. Pass them quietly and nothing will happen to you.
This is one of the most beautiful climbs I have ever done in my life. I have visited it several times, having climbed it on both sides. The north side is harder and the asphalt is quite patchy. The climb is not very steep, but you have to be careful on very hot days, because there is not much shade.
The scenery all the way up and, especially when approaching the Covalruyo viewpoint, is spectacular.
It is also worth bearing in mind that the fog usually falls within minutes, so it is advisable to visit it on a day when you are 100% certain that the weather will be fine so that you can enjoy the climb in all its splendour.
Very little traffic, as other roads are used to go from the north of Cantabria to the Castilian plateau (Los Tornos, Estacas, El Escudo, Reinosa motorway).
Beautiful climb, definitely worth it, a bit tough for a class 1 climb.
Good quality road, not much traffic
