Definitely recommended but better not in the afternoon. Shade can no longer be found here then.

Super nice climb with some very nice views!
For some reason the altitude on the sign seems to be a bit off!

Fairly steady climb with super road surface. The views are really fantastic and I only encountered 2 cars's on the entire climb. Absolutely one of the most beautiful climbs I have done. Maybe THE most beautiful. I will take some more pictures next time.

The Port of LAS PALOMAS.
GRAZALEMA area.
Road from Zahara de la Sierra to Grazalema, or to Benamahoma or El Bosque.

One word would perfectly define this climb: SPECTACULARITY.

Very important:
- NO ROADS
- Some traffic, cars, motorbikes and some busses, ONLY ON THE ROAD (the only road that communicates directly Zahara de la Sierra with Grazalema).
- Very little shade, only at the foot of some slopes.
- Wet areas on the road, early in the morning.

Lots of cyclists, mostly road cyclists, some with MTB bikes.

A climb to ENJOY a GREAT LANDSCAPE.
If we start the climb at the crossroads between the reservoir, the road from Algodonales, the one that goes to Prado del Rey and the one that will take us to Zahara de la Sierra, we will climb for 13.4 km, with only two breaks of just 100 m each. A difference in altitude of about 820/900 m, as we will reach the elevation of 1124 m. And a real average elevation gain of around 6,7 5, although there are some 11% horseshoes.
If we start in Arroyomolinos, the "beach" of the Pantano, which would be very good to warm up our legs, we have to add another 4 or 5 km, with a gentle slope, but always going up.
It has been climbed 4 times in the Tour of Spain, the 1st of them classified as High Category, the other 3 only 1st.
The first km are steep, if we compare it with our start, and already in Zahara de la Sierra we find ramps of 7 %, but we have only started it.
When we leave this extraordinary village, we already find other slopes, of 8, 9 or 10 %. And we begin to enjoy spectacular scenery........
At Kilometer 7, after a couple of hard horseshoes, we find a MIRADOR, where most of us stop to get our strength back and eat something, or just take a walk.........
From here on it gets much more serious, the famous horseshoes begin, framed with white cairns, which show us where we have to go up, but the scenery is even more SPECTACULAR.
In some of these horseshoes we already find slopes of two figures, at km 8 we climb for about 400 m a 10 %, at km 10 up to the 12 %, at km 12, several of the 11 %, little by little we approach towards the culmination, and continue enjoying the LANDSCAPE......
We have the last 400 m left, a very steep straight, which seems that it never ends....but we reach the top, where 1,357 m is indicated, but that measurement is WRONG, in reality we are at the elevation of 1124.
Take shelter to go down to Grazalema, which we will reach after a vertiginous descent.
WE RECOMMEND that in Grazalema, apart from visiting a splendid viewpoint, we fill water bottles and buy some delicious pastries.
I INSIST: HARD CLIMB but to do it ENJOYING TO THE TOP OF THE LANDSCAPE.
