The road surface is usually excellent. But sadly. Is the worst bit of road surface on the steepest part. The road surface is one of those's cobblestone lanes that were once perfect, but then got asphalted and where now the asphalt is gone so you still have nice convex cobblestones. You would say the surroundings are nice, remove that asphalt again and make it 'Berg Ten Houte' gewijs back into a cobbled road. Heritage, you know. But then you can't, because at the end of the lane you have one option. Turn left, towards the cycle path, on the busy lane, you are not allowed as cyclists. Rightly so. A little earlier, you can turn onto an asphalt forest path. Which, although quite narrow, is definitely doable with your race bike. So a dead-end-climb it is not.
This climb is fun to do, very quiet and very pretty. You cross the stream and the road starts to rise but then you turn left and the road rears up like a wall. The road surface is part tarmac, part cobbles and because of that, as well as the changes in gradient, it can be deceptively difficult to find a steady rhythm. Just get out of the saddle and power to the top.
