A magnificent and very sportive climb, in three distinct parts. First the climb to Saint-Jean-le-Vieux and the D280 (Balcon de Belledonne), on an irregular and very steep road. Then an intermediate part undulating on the D280, up to Mas Julien, and from there one of the steepest roads in the region leads you almost in a straight line to the place called "Pré du Fourneau" where there is a small hydro-electric power station, and where the asphalt ends.

You can also come to the Mas Julien by a road coming from Lancey (Villard-Bonnot) and passing by the Combe-de-Lancey, the ascent will then be shorter and more regular.

Those with solid tires will be able to continue on a gravel track of about 2 km to the Pré-Long pass, and from there to Saint-Mury-Monteymond on a very nice road (asphalt this time) and back to the Balcon de Belledonne road. I did this extension with 28 section tires, and it was already very limited. It's better to have even wider tires, and if you don't have them, turn around at the Pré du Fourneau.
