Friendly meadow

This climb in the central Appenine region of Italy is very well known to local cyclists. It starts at the Staffoli Horses, a riding school that hosts a rather famous (among horse lovers) yearly event, called 'Corsalonga'. Before the last and steepest part of the climb you pass Capracotta, a well-known touristic spot which attracts people from all over the world. It's also depicted in Ernest Hemingway's novel 'A Farewell to Arms'. The climb ends at Prato Gentile, which literally translates as 'friendly meadow'.

A fun, fairly varied climb, alternating between forest and mossy rocky landscape. The road is relatively wide and quiet and if I remember correctly also of reasonable quality, with not too much mud. The stretch from Capracotta (they have delicious lentils there) feels like a dessert to the climb but is indeed a bit steeper, so it takes some effort - at least up to the snapped cross!... read more
