A truly epic ride. It has everything. Great scenery, hairpin curves, steep sections, lots of vertical. Tough, challenging ride. Be prepared for a day of grinding it out. The first half of the ride is very manageable. The second half is tough. A must ride.... read more

Wonderful experience with a view over the plaines that will stay with you for life. It's high, but you also start high, so all in all doable. The descent is fantastic over very good tarmac. Bit bothered by cars's in the descent though, by bike you want to go faster of course. Great experience.

Geweldige ervaring.

Pikes Peak is a mountain near Colorado Springs with an elevation of 4302 m (14,115 feet).
The mountain was named after Zebulon Pike, an explorer who led the Pikes expedition into southern Colorado in 1806.

The total climb is 19 miles and after each mile there is a beautiful sign with current elevation and a picture of a plant or animal from the area.

It is crowded with cars's and particularly irritating at the beginning of the climb, although drivers drive well around us.
Sometimes they shout encouragement, as they too know this is no easy task.
The percentages fluctuate between 7 and 10%, with occasional peaks of 11 to 12%.

After a car park, where people can go up in shuttles, the best 10 kilometres of the climb follow.
The tree line is passed and you can see beautifully down where you came from.
I take many photos's, as the views are grandiose.

The effect of the thin air is noticeable and the whole climb is certainly not an easy task.

Above, a beautiful pass sign.
