The Pena Escrita is a very erratic climb but if you have done it, it will be on your record.
The first 3 km are a quiet run and good to warm up your muscles for what's to come. Because km 4 and 5 are directly double digits. Then it's quiet uphill again and even about two km flat or even downhill. Then the Pena Escrita comes up with 4 ultimate kilometers that are reminiscent of the Angliru because 4 km before the end there is a piece of 800 m at 25％. Then it's downhill for a while and straight back to the sky. But the medal is waiting at the top.
The road surface is very rough most of the time but it's fun because the road is narrow and you have one bend after another and most of the time no S-bends.
The last few km's is a piece of Spanish road art because they have put a layer of asphalt on it especially for the Vuelta but...either the asphalt maker had looked too deeply into the glass the day before or there was not enough asphalt available because at regular places there is no layer of asphalt. Escrita is a nature reserve that was in the news a few years ago because the animals that were kept there were in very bad conditions and after a lot of waiting they were moved.
Attention this climb is closed for a large part of the year. Highly recommended for those who love rugged climbs.
De Pena Escrita is een erg grillige klim maar als je hem gedaan hebt staat hij mooi op je palmares.
De eerste 3 km zijn een rustige aanloop en goed om je spieren op te warmen voor wat komt. Want km 4 en 5 zijn direct dubbele cijfers. Daarna is het weer rustig bergop en zelfs een tweetal km plat tot zelfs wat bergaf. Daarna komt het rotding in de Pena Escrita naar boven met 4 ultieme kilometers die doen denken aan de Angliru want 4 km voor het einde is er een stuk van 800 m aan 25％. Daarna even bergaf en terug recht naar de hemel. Maar boven wacht de medaille.
Het wegdek is het grootste deel erg ruw maar leuk door dat de weg smal is en je de ene na de andere bocht hebt en meestal geen S-bochten.
De laatste kms is een stukje Spaanse wegdekkunst want men heeft er speciaal voor de Vuelta een laagje asfalt op gelegd maar...ofwel had de asfaltlegger de dag ervoor wat veel te diep in het glas gekeken of was er te weinig asfalt voorradig want op regelmatige plaatsen is er geen laagje asfalt aanwezig. Escrita is een natuurgebied dat enkele jaren geleden in het nieuws kwam omdat de dieren die er werden gehouden in zeer slechte omstandigheden waren en na veel wachten verhuisd werden.
Opgelet deze klim is een groot deel van het jaar gesloten. Een echte aanrader voor wie houdt van grillige zware beklimmingen.
