The Pena Cabarga is a fantastic but rough climb all the way in the north of Spain near Santander. If you take the road from Bilbao to Santander you will find the start of this terrible climb just before Santander. This climb is only 6 km long but with an average gradient of 9.3 % a killer. Along the way and at the top, you will be treated to beautiful views of the city of Santander and the sea. The road surface is very rough but no problem to ride a road bike on. The Pena Cabarga has been an arrival point in the Vuelta twice in the last 10 years and with stage winners Chris Froome and Joaquim Rodriguez you know that only real climbers win here.
Also you have regularly a piece of false flat and then you understand why this climb is so terrible.
When you're in the neighbourhood you shouldn't miss a visit to the museo del ciclismo in Santander. This museum is a work of a good friend of mine Santiago Revuelta founder and manager of one of the most successful Spanish cycling teams ever namely Teka which won more than 900 victories and jerseys between 1976 and 1990 and had with Marino Lejaretta, Alberto Fernandez, Reimund Dietzen, Noel Dejonckheere, Bernard Thevenet, ... a lot of top riders in its ranks.
The museum is the most beautiful and with its 2000 square meters the largest in the world. More than 600 jerseys of which many signed by Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaminck, Francesco Moser, Bahamontes, Indurain, Contador and also more than 300 racing bikes, 2 follow cars, ...
