Good road surface but careful in the grass verges as plenty of thorns. Beautiful approach to the climb by a lake. The climb starts with a fairly unrelenting steep section, before entering a hairpin section which allows at least some respite on the corners. I did this in August and it was very hot! There are two water stops on the climb but the first was dry. The second one is just after the steep sections, around 350m into the ascent. Lovely fresh water to refill bidons or to tip over yourself. ... read more

The air gets cooler the high up so the section after the water stop is fantastic. Great views of the hairpin sector and the road then passes across into another valley. The views are spectacular and there is a decent few km at the top of the climb into Sant’Anna, where there are cafes and restaurants. Roads are wide throughout and traffic fairly minimal; the drivers have options to leave plenty of room to pass and we’re all considerate of cyclists.
