One of the toughest climbs in the area, covered in the second stage of the 2019 Giro (3rd category GPM) and since 2023 the protagonist of the Trofeo 'Comune Capraia e Limite', an uphill time trial reserved for amateurs Èlite and Under 23. It is definitely worth challenging the time trial on this climb, but you can also tackle it to enjoy the fatigue and the views it has to offer.

A tough climb of about 5.5 km among the olive trees of Montalbano. Scenically beautiful and with very little traffic: few cyclists and very few cars (sometimes it is possible to go the entire climb without crossing any cars).
The first two kilometres are very hard, around 9 % average, with ramps in double figures. Then for about a kilometre and a half it becomes a bit of a step, with two easier sections separated by a ramp again in double figures. Once in the village of Castra, a hard section begins with a series of hairpin bends (3 if I am not mistaken) . At the exit of the village, after a few hundred metres of easier sections, you are faced with the so-called "leg-breaker": 300 m around 12-13% which, faced after about 4 km of real climbing, make themselves felt quite strongly in the legs and lungs. Once past this little wall, the climb becomes easier with about a kilometre where the road first climbs gently, then flattens out and finally even has a short, gentle descent. Just when it all seems to be over, the Castra presents you with a final little wall of about 250 m at around 10-13 % which finally leads to the rejoining of the much more beaten Pinone road.
For the toughness and effort it requires, it is my favourite climb in the area. It represents a nice challenge for cyclists who love climbs. It was featured once in the Giro d'Italia, classified as a second-category GPM.
