The road up to the turn-off to the Estrada de Pena is stunning, with good tarmac and beautiful hairpin turns. However, the second part of this climb is not doable by road bike (maybe by mountain bike or e-bike). Once you turn left onto the cobbles, it becomes way too tight, busy (city buses), the cobbles are in bad shape and, above all, it is too steep. Do yourself a favour and go with the road to the right - however, you'll end up in Pé da Serra via the Estrada dos Capuchos (nice and good tarmac) towards the sea, from where you can take N247 or N9 back to Sintra. It's a 20km diversions, but this is for your own safety.
