If you want to go to Todtnauberg, Schauinsland or Freiburg, this is the route of choice. However, this also explains the sometimes heavy traffic. The road surface is excellent, the route could be a little wider. Just a "transfer pass". Incidentally, if you turn off to Todtnauberg after just under 5 kilometres, the traffic is no longer a problem and you can still enjoy a good scramble ;)
Wenn man nach Todtnauberg, zum Schauinsland oder nach Freiburg will, ist dies die Strecke der Wahl. Das erklärt jedoch auch den teils starken Verkehr. Der Straßenbelag ist top, die Strecke könnte etwas breiter sein. Eben ein "Transferpass". Biegt man übrigens nach knapp 5km nach Todtnauberg ab, ist der Verkehr kein Problem mehr und man kann trotzdem ordentlich kraxeln ;)
Spicy climb over a fairly busy road. Strangely, the even spicier climb from Steinwasen is not described on Climbfinder; it has sections up to 14％. I liked the climb from the latter side better.
Pittige klim over een redelijk drukke weg. Vreemd genoeg staat de nog pittiger beklimming vanuit Steinwasen niet op Climbfinder beschreven; Deze heeft stukken tot 14％. Ik vond de beklimming vanaf de laatstgenoemde zijde mooier.
One of the least enjoyable climbs in the Todtnau area: the climb is in no way special and the road is relatively flat. Traffic does indeed take account of other road users, so it's fine to cycle there.
Tip: Make it a 108km round trip from Todtnau with 2600hm by riding to Schauinsland at the top of the Notschrei, descend to Freiburg and then climb the Kandel and Schauinsland.
Een van de minst leuke beklimmingen in de omgeving van Todtnau: de klim is in geen enkel opzicht bijzonder en de weg is relatief weg. Verkeer houdt inderdaad wel goed rekening met andere weggebruikers, waardoor er prima te fietsen is.
Tip: Maak er vanuit Todtnau een ronde van 108km met 2600hm van door op de top van de Notschrei door te rijden naar Schauinsland, af te dalen naar Freiburg en vervolgens de Kandel en Schauinsland te beklimmen.
Directly from Todtnau it starts to climb steeply, after about a kilometer you have a nice view of the busy waterfalls. Between Aftersteg and Muggenbrunn it keeps on climbing, because the road is fairly straight this is not the most inspiring part. After that you enter the area of the ski slopes and cross country skiers. The road is quite busy, but the traffic took good account of other road users. From the Notschreipass I continued to the Schauinsland, another 100 altimeters extra on a long stretch of false flat.
Direct vanuit Todtnau begint het stevig te klimmen, na ongeveer een kilometer heb je even mooi zicht op de druk bezochte watervallen. Tussen Aftersteg en Muggenbrunn klimt het stevig door, omdat de weg redelijk rechtdoor loopt is dit niet het meest inspirerende stuk. Daarna kom je in het gebied van de skipistes en langlaufers terecht. De weg wordt redelijk druk bereden, maar het verkeer hield goed rekening met andere weggebruikers. Ik ben vanaf de Notschreipass nog doorgereden naar de Schauinsland, nog zo'n 100 hoogtemeters extra over lang stuk vals plat.
