I started on Monte Subasio from the foot of the mountain. So still a bit below Assisi. This adds about 100 more altimeters. You then start completely at the foot with a very steep straight section just past Assisi. Known from the giro donne in 2023. This stretch is really punchy and you then naturally end up in the centre. Once the centre is behind you, the climb really starts. The tarmac is very good in most places with several hairpin bends. You practically never see the top. Partly because of the many trees. This does make it cooler and more pleasant to climb. After 9km or so, you arrive at a kind of summit where many people are tanning. This is also where the tarmac steeps. Behind this "top" begins the gravel road to the real summit. This one is really bad in many places with really big stones in some places. With a road bike it is not doable. I did it with a gravel bike and all in all it went rather well. After about 3km of gravel, you arrive at the highest point from where the parachuters leave. For me personally, it was a very nice col. It did feel at least as tough as alpe d'huez. It may also have been partly due to the temperature. On alpe d'Huez it was only 20 degrees in my case. On monte Subasio it was thick 30. If you are in the region a very nice col to climb.

A climb not to be missed if you are in the area. The real climb begins after Porta Perlici from Assisi, with 4 km at 10%. After a few hairpin bends, a breathtaking view opens up on a clear day. From the Eremo delle Carceri the climb becomes more pedalable and you enter the woods, the air becomes decidedly cooler and the road becomes rutted. Once you have passed 1000 metres on the right you will find the stazzi, which indicate that your effort is almost at an end if you are on a mountain bike: after a bend to the right there is a car park and from here the road becomes white, only gravel and MTBs can go on. From the car park look back and if there are no clouds the view will repay you for the effort. Close your sleeve, the descent is definitely cold and watch out for asphalt and cars going uphill, on holidays there can be traffic. There are no water fountains along the route... Enjoy the climb!

Buona salita!
