Done on a cold January day. The ascent is initially with hairpin bends near the town. Then into the forest where there are still a few bends, but it climbs fairly steadily. A non-steep ascent that gives rhythm. Definitely less beautiful than the mountain of the same name in Lugano, but the panorama is still beautiful.... read more

A beautiful climb, quite demanding but satisfying, I always made it up to Cardada and never stopped at Monte Bre, but even from Bre the view is fantastic and repays the effort.

This is a beautiful climb that takes you from Locarno at Lago Maggiore, to Monte Brè. Highly recommended!

The first part is on brand new tarmac through a fancy suburb (Locarno Monti). After there is a long and steep part through a dense forest on a more narrow road, but still on fine tarmac.

Then you arrive at the lovely village of Monte Brè, from which you have stunning views of the lake and the tall moutains around.

This route ends a bit after the village on a parking lot in another forest. This very last bit is really steep!

No tunnels on the whole route and little traffic too when I did it on a Sunday morning in September.
