The Katsberg, in French Mont des Cats, together with the nearby town of Cassel is a must go in this beautiful region of French Flanders (France) near the Belgian-French border. It can be climbed from several sides with sometimes quite tough and steep parts, the road surface is asphalted and easy to drive on. You can easily spend a day there, it's also possible to do some nice hikes, it's also part of the Elfbergen hike from Westouter, a tough cross-border climbing hike of 50 km which doesn't only include the Katsberg but also the Kokereelberg, the Zwarteberg and the Rodeberg, already done several times and in addition to cycling on and around the Katsberg it's a real must. At the top of the Katsberg is an abbey from which you get very nice views and they also sell the same trappist and cheese are very tasty, after all that cycling or hiking a welcome refreshment. The Katsberg can be seen from far away with its enormous 200 m high broadcasting mast, a beacon in the landscape.

The climb starts very gently; until you turn left and pass the sign Col de Berghen (109m). Then follows a steep part of >10% up to the abbey. Beautiful views!

Mooie uitzichten!

Da Katsberg is a nice climb on all sides. This side, however, has a bit of 10% which can be felt in the legs ... The Katsberg is indeed situated in France, not in the hilly country of West-Flanders.
