The tough initial climb is also rather boring as it's hemmed in between houses. Once past that section the gradient eases off nicely. The climbing is enjoyable with good views to your right across Middleton Dale to Eyam Moor. It lacks the drama of other climbs in the area but is a worthwhile alternative to avoid a section of the busy A623 if you're heading west from Stoney Middleton.
