This is pretty much the climb of Rio. Behind Rio's famous botanical garden, the road here climbs up into the urban jungle of Parque National da Tijuca. Especially on weekends, it is pleasantly busy here in the morning. Lots of cyclists, runners, walkers and also people on their way to one of the waterfalls nearby. The climb itself is a very tough one. Especially from the moment you pass the falls, it is 2 kilometres of raking. Once at Vista Chinesa (don't forget to enjoy the fabulous view), the road flattens out a bit. Especially with Rio's ever-high temperatures and the high humidity of the urban jungle, it is hard work.

Among Dutch cycling fans, the climb will be best known for the fall of Annemiek van Vleuten, who, descending here, saw her chance of Olympic gold go up in smoke in a painful crash.
