Val di Cogne, one of the side valleys of the wide Aosta Valley with 3 possible cycling end goals at the end, climbed September 2023.
Long climb starts in Aymavilles where you climb directly out of the town via several hairpin bends firmly (5km - gem.7 ％) followed by slightly winding climbing through the forest lined by rock massifs. A short downhill through a gorge to cross the river followed by a second short portion of climbing (8％). Afterwards the valley opens up again and you cycle on a wide road slightly uphill with slight curves and a dozen tunnels and galleries along the river to the namesake of the valley : Cogne.
For Lillaz as your finishing point, you cycle right through touristy Cogne to then climb false flat on fairly straight and wide road along the mountain river. There is even a wide cycle path before the finishing point.
As the picturesque mountain village is traffic-free, it stops just before the access bridge over the river with a view of the snow-capped peaks of the National Park. There is parking,a water source and plenty of catering facilities.
Was also arrival point of Giro stage in 2022.

Lange klim start in Aymavilles waar je via enkele haarspeldbochten direct stevig (5km - gem.7 ％) het stadje uit klimt gevolgd door licht kronkelend klimwerk door het woud omzoomt door rotsmassieven. Even bergaf door een kloof om de rivier over te steken gevolgd door een tweede korte portie klimwerk (8％). Nadien trekt het dal terug open en fiets je op brede weg licht stijgend met flauwe bochten en een tiental tunnels en gaanderijen langs de rivier tot de naamgever van het dal : Cogne.
Voor Lillaz als eindpunt fiets je dwars door het toeristische Cogne om nadien vals plat te klimmen op vrij rechte en brede weg langs de bergrivier. Er is zelfs een breed fietspad voor het eindpunt.
Omdat het pittoresk bergdorp verkeersvrij is stopt het vlak voor de toegangsbrug over de rivier met zicht op de besneeuwde toppen van het Nationaal Park. Er is parking,een waterbron en voldoende horeca.
Was ook aankomstplaats van Giro etappe in 2022.

An ascent that is well worth it for the environment in which it takes place, a typical route in the Valle d'Aosta area, with the steepest section at the start to enter the valley and then gradually becoming pedalable. Wonderful views.
Salita che merita per l'ambiente in cui si svolge, percorso tipico della zona valdostana, con il tratto più ripido all'inizio per entrare in valle e poi man mano pedalabile. Panorami meravigliosi.
A climb in the line of beautiful mountain stages from the Aosta valley. Like most of the others, Cogne-Lillaz is a long runner, interspersed with steep sections. Cogne-Lillaz is neither the toughest nor the prettiest of the bunch (the road is quite crowded in summer with tourist traffic), but the beautiful views remain, and at the end of the paved road a view of the magnificent Grand Paradiso. The road is wide and well maintained, so that descending at high speed is possible, for those who want that.
Een klim uit het rijtje mooie bergritten vanuit de Aosta vallei. Zoals de meeste andere, is Cogne-Lillaz een lange loper, afgewisseld met steile stukken. Cogne-Lillaz is noch de zwaarste, noch de mooiste in het rijtje (de weg is in de zomer redelijk druk met toeristisch verkeer), maar de fraaie vergezichten blijven, en op het einde van de verharde weg een blik op de prachtige Grand Paradiso. De weg is breed en goed onderhouden, zodat dalen met hoge snelheid kan, voor degenen die dat willen.
