This is a beautiful climb!!! You cycle through canyon. First you cycle away from the river Ardeche and see huge cliffs on your left. Then you turn after and bend back through a tunnel to the river where you have fantastic views.
Early morning is the best time to tackle this climb. You won't then be bothered by buses and cars'with trailers full of canoes's.
Tip is to cycle down the whole gorges. This whole road is about 25km long. At lots of points you have viewpoints over the river. The tarmac is a billiard sheet, just watch out for the stray goats!!! This road goes up and down constantly.

Steep thing, but just long enough to enjoy banging against it. If you are early enough, the crowds (and heat) are not too bad. There are more beautiful climbs in the area, but the view on top is definitely worth it and since it is a through route, it is easy to fit in a round trip.

21-07-21: Came from the other side and couldn't resist turning around at the bottom. Short climb but nice and spicy. It is immediately clear what you start with! At the tunnel the steepest part.

Nice tour: From Vallon Pont-d'Arc via the Serre de Tourre and then on to Saint Martin d'Ardèche, cross over there and via Orgnac l'Aven and La Bastide de Virac back to Vallon.

Beautiful surroundings at the Gorges d'Ardeche. Pressure on the road with many campers and rather anti-social driving motorcycles. Unexpectedly tough with steep parts where you can really break down. The rest of the road, the next 20 km to Saint Martin d'Ardeche is also tough, actually a sequence of about 20 consecutive short steep climbs with short descents and short false flat stretches. Very irregular and really hard!
