I did this climb in summer holiday 2023 in combination with the climb to Champillon. Up to Bionaz you cycle wonderfully surrounded by greenery. From Bionaz, the road surface soon gets a bit worse.

At the reservoir, there are beautiful views of the 3- and 4-thousanders in the area.
Definitely worth cycling if you are in the Aosta Valley

Done on an extremely cloudy day in early July. Well worth a stop. We set off from the road to the Great St Bernard Pass and then entered the Valpelline valley. Maybe it was the weather, but unfortunately there was no view of the surrounding peaks. On the other hand, there were very few cars, really only a few dozen. The average gradient does not give credit to the effort of the climb. Anything but easy. Especially in the middle and at the end. Flat sections alternate with very aggressive climbs. Beautiful!

Bello!

Cycled this relatively unknown climb to high-altitude dam in September 2023.
Climbing out of Aosta via SR17 to Porosan starts with some four hairpin bends before cycling up the valley flank in an oasis of calm. One tiny village follows another on the winding road.
I stayed on the main road through Roisan (deviating from CF route) before joining the slightly busier road downhill just before the touristy Valpelline.
Once through that, the road, with gentle curves snappy without extreme %, creeps into the river valley for 20 km into the mountains. Only the passage of Oyace briefly provides a brisk hairpin sequence loose through the village.
After the last inhabited houses in agricultural Bionaz, the lock on narrow road first winds through a narrow gorge along vertical rock faces. Afterwards, the dam can be seen from afar but, as usual, a few more hairpin bends are shoved under the wheels to finish at the height of the dam just under 2,000 altimeters.
The beautiful lake created by the 150-metre-high dam is surrounded by impressive snow-covered three- and four-thousanders.

Practicality:
Reasonable asphalt on entire route, towards the summit slightly worse.
Moderate traffic still decreases towards the end.
Some short lighted tunnels on the route.
Adequate supplies along the way, summit with parking (mountain hikers) and catering. .

Quiet long irregular climb in beautiful cycling environment!!!
Definitely bike if you're in Aosta.

Rustige lange onregelmatige klim in prachtige fietsomgeving!!!
Zeker fietsen als je in Aosta bent.

Cycled part of the climb from Valpelline. The steeper section in the middle is beautiful - nice curves and one village follows another. Towards the end, the road surface does get less and the climb ends at the (reservoir) lake. From there, the descent along the same road back again.

From Valpelline, a wonderfully gentle climb to a considerable height. The view of the Matterhorn on the way is magnificent. Generally good road surface with some steeper sections, but also sections to catch your breath.

The Lago di Place Moulin belongs to the list of pleasant, long climbs of the Aosta Valley. A quiet climb towards the summits of the Cervino / Matterhorn. Alternated with some high percentages if you have to ride up the flanks, so you stay with the lesson. Tip: if the road is open, stay longer on SR-17 than the route description indicates. You will then drive on the SR-17 through Roisan and the forest instead of descending to the much busier SR-28 before the village. A few kms later you'll reach the SR-28. After Valpelline the road becomes quiet and you can better look at the beautiful mountains.
