I have never driven it in 1x, because we stayed in Frigliana. The start of the climb is very busy, lots of cars, but after Frigiliana it gets really beautiful and also very steep. Not the most pleasant way to start your day's ride ...
A spicy start from Nerja with quite a bit of false flat. You don't expect it there. The most difficult part is on the way out of Frigiliana. There goes up with 2 hairpins about 13%. After that there are a few more big pinholes, but the worst is over.
First 5km to Frigliana is quite busy, after that you'll encounter almost no traffic.
