Great col to do, tough because of its length in combination with the number of altimeters to be made. Quite a bit of variation in steepness, it is not a very even col in this respect. Found it very pleasant cycling, both up and down.
Nice variation between first in the forest and later above the tree line (cloud line :)) with the beautiful views.
I did it from Oloron -> Arette, continuously a fine wide road, and very quiet in terms of fellow road users for a Saturday in mid-summer.
Highly recommended!

Aanrader!

What a beautiful climb this is! First a quiet run and then a steady climb through the forest. Sometimes a less steep part to catch our breath. When the steep climbing is done, it's a beautiful climb between the rocks to get above the tree line. Still a bit of climbing for beautiful views. And in terms of traffic very quiet (July 2020) and excellent road surface.

Last summer 2017 with still fresh legs started here with a longer tour with luggage. Rain, wind, snow and sections with 17%. Nice and spicy. Descent on the Spanish side was magnificent.

Lekker pittig. Afdaling aan de Spaanse kant was magnifiek.

I did this climb in August 2016. The road surface is in fine condition (so the indication bad road surface is not correct).
