At the beginning of 2022, the zigzag fences were removed for a while, but now in August they are there again. Hope that they will find an alternative because it takes the momentum out of it completely. After the fences it goes up a lot and at the end it is really hard to pedal. At the top you come to a crossroads where I always turn right and take the descent via the Kapellerweg.
Begin 2022 waren de zig-zag hekjes even verwijderd maar nu in augustus toch opnieuw aanwezig. Hoop dat ze hier een alternatief op vinden want het haalt de vaart er helemaal uit. Na de hekjes gaat het flink omhoog en aan het einde is het echt wel even op de pedalen trappen. Boven kom je op een kruispunt waar ik steeds rechtsaf sla en zo de afdaling via de Kapellerweg neem.
Good but unfortunately somewhat short runner over excellent asphalt along a number of stately places up to the beautiful chapel on the summit. In the beginning fairly tight zigzag tackles (slightly because of this the road already starts to rise slightly). At two-thirds of the climb a slightly steeper part. You drive up through a beautiful forest.
Goede maar helaas wat korte loper over prima asfalt langs een aantal statiën tot de mooie kapel op de top. In het begin redelijk krappe zigzag-hekjes (iets daardoor begint de weg al lichtjes te stijgen). Op twee-derde van de klim een iets steiler stuk. Je rijdt door een mooi bos omhoog.
The climb to the highest point of Sittard where the Saint Rose Chapel is located. Given the rich history you may not miss it. Fact: in the 70's the Kollenberg was part of the heavy cycling criterium for professionals. The course consisted of the ascent of the Beukenboomweg and Kapellerweg, and the descent of the Kollenberg. Famous cyclists, including Joop Zoetemelk and Eddy Merckx, cycled here.
De klim naar het hoogste punt van Sittard waar de Sint-Rosakapel staat. Gelet op de rijke historie mag je deze niet missen. Weetje: in de jaren 70 was de Kollenberg deel van het loodzware wielercriterium voor profs. Het parcours bestond uit de beklimming van de Beukenboomweg en Kapellerweg, en de afdaling van de Kollenberg. Beroemde renners, waaronder Joop Zoetemelk en Eddy Merckx, hebben hier gefietst.
Magnificent climb that announces the symbolic opening of the ridge. The disadvantage is that there are brake fences so you cannot start at full speed. Along the road are mini chapels describing the story of Jesus. At the top is a larger chapel, so actually this is the Dutch Wall of Geraardsbergen. Tip: read the wikipedia page beforehand, there's plenty to read about it!
Schitterende beklimming die de symbolische opening van de heuvelrug aankondigt. Nadeel is dat er afrem-hekjes staan waardoor je niet op volle snelheid kan beginnen. Langs de weg staan mini kapelletjes het verhaal van Jezus beschrijven. Op de top ligt een grotere kapel, eigenlijk is dit dus de Nederlandse Muur van Geraardsbergen. Tip: lees van tevoren de wikipedia-pagina, er is voldoende over te lezen!
