You start off on a farm track through apple orchards with only a slight incline. Once you reach the forest, the actual ascent begins, with views to the north along a kind of one-way road. Personally, I found the ascent easier than indicated.
Zunächst startet man auf einem Wirtschaftsweg durch Apfelplantagen mit nur geringen Prozenten. Nachdem man in den Wald gelangt ist, beginnt der eigentliche Aufstieg, wobei man auf einer Art Einbahnstraße Ausblicke in den Norden bekommt. Ich persönlich empfand den Aufstieg als leichter,als es angegeben ist.
A very nice and tasty climb with a nice viewpoint at the end (you can also continue the road). Good tarmac although there was some mud on the last part. The approach from Volkenrath is technically very quiet but leads through a beautiful rural environment, especially along orchards. You can skip the approach and start the real climb directly from Hastenrath. From the approach, turn right at the Y-junction and you'll see the slope in front of you. This is where you can start. In two straight stretches the road rises to the edge of the forest and then there are two more hairpin bends (The route is a bit weird because this is an old parking lot. Follow the one-way signs) and on the right side is the viewpoint with panoramic views of the area north of the Eifel (including the huge lignite power plant of Weissweiler). After the first hairpin bend (from here a nice view to the east) is a barrier. This one has a bypass for cyclists although it seems that the barrier has been open for a long time.
In terms of environment and climbing technique, a wonderful climb.
Een zeer fraaie en lekkere klim met op het eind een mooi uitzichtpunt (je kan de weg ook verder vervolgen). Prima asfalt als lag er op het laatste deel nu wel wat modder. De aanloop vanuit Volkenrath is klimtechnisch erg rustig maar loopt door een mooie landelijke omgeving, vooral langs boomgaarden. Je kan de aanloop overslaan door vanuit Hastenrath direct aan de echte klim te beginnen. Vanuit de aanloop ga je op de Y-splitsing rechts en dan zie je de helling voor je opdoemen. Hier mag je aan de slag. In twee rechte stukken stijgt de weg naar de bosrand en daarna volgen nog twee haarspeldbochten (De route is een beetje maf want dit is een oud parkeerterrein. Volg de eenrichtingsborden.) waarna aan de rechterkant het uitzichtpunt is met weids uitzicht op het gebied ten noorden van de Eifel (o.a. op de enorme bruinkoolcentrale van Weissweiler). Na de eerste haarspeldbocht (hiervandaan mooi uitzicht naar het oosten) is een slagboom. Deze heeft voor fietsers een bypass al lijkt het er op dat de slagboom al lang openstaat.
Qua omgeving en klimtechnisch een heerlijke klim.
