There are really two parts to this climb. The first half (approximately) rises up from the River Severn through houses and some of the industrial heritage of Coalbrookdale. Parked cars narrow the road at the bottom, so on busy days (i.e. any warm and sunny weekend) this may cause annoying hold ups. Riding up the fairly gentle gradients will eventually bring you to Coalbrookdale village, where you may have to stop at a set of lights controlling a short, narrow stretch of the road. Once through the lights the road leaves the village leaving about a kilometer of steady uphill ahead of you, with a gorge and even small waterfalls on your left (you might hear them but you won't be able to see them). Initially the surface is good, but for the last few hundred metres it becomes excellent. After the road was closed for several months whilst repairs were carried out to repair a landslip towards the top, the authorities have resurfaced several hundred metres with smooth, pristine black top (as of May 2024). With that in mind I'd also recommend the descent, with 2 or three chevronned bends that can be pushed a little on the excellent road surface, making for some speedy, exhilarating cornering. Not the hardest climb in the area, but one of the most enjoyable.
