Hammersley Lane is a tough climb. it starts steeply, and the gradient continues to roll off for a long way after you crest the steep bit, so you feel like you're working hard for longer than you ought to. It's not so urban as the climbs nearer the town centre, Cock Lane has traffic lights over a railway bridge on a steep part, and the lights will change before you get over the bridge, due to the steepn... read more

Hammersley Lane is a tough climb. it starts steeply, and the gradient continues to roll off for a long way after you crest the steep bit, so you feel like you're working hard for longer than you ought to. This said, I like it, and if you compare it to the nearby options it comes out well. It's not so urban as the climbs nearer the town centre, Cock Lane has traffic lights over a railway bridge on a steep part, and the lights will change before you get over the bridge, due to the steepness. Whitehouse Lane is rough, more like a gravel road. Hammersley Lane will also get you to Gravelly Way straightforwardly, so it works when route planning in this part of the world. It gets a bit of traffic, but not excessively. There's a good view up the valley from part way up the steep bit. It's worth a detour.
