I am 12 years old now and this is the first col I have climbed and certainly not the last. The 23 steep hairpin bends in the Grosse Scheidegg from Grindelwald were unforgettable. In the climb, you sometimes have to get off the bus, which is a good excuse to take a rest. At the top, you have a mountain house, restaurant and a very nice view of the mountains. It was the toughest climb I have ever done 😉 . Don't be fooled by people with electric bikes, because there were a lot of them. My d... read more

Done this climb on bike trip with about 15kg of bike bags. Need little story I watched my speed as little as possible. Mind set to zero and with legs on coffee grinder position hoisted myself upwards. Beautiful views along the way. Stopped every now and then to enjoy the view. At the summit, put on a quick jacket anyway and then dove down.

In the comments here, I read that it is a nice start to a (cycling) stay in Switzerland... So I did. Big surprise that I had to climb the entire climb on the lightest gear. Not properly trained after all? Later, I had a look at the profile... Tight 11% up! That explains it. Next time, take a closer look at the profile.

All in all, it went quite well, but personally I would look for something less steep on the first day to get used to it.

In terms of beauty, it is very nice, view of Grindelwald is fantastic. Yet no 5 stars. The descent to Meiringen is namely terrible! Asphalt is very bad there. While the environment is much nicer to cycle through. So take that side to climb and descend to Grindelwald. Then you can also enjoy that beautiful view.

Strak 11% omhoog!

Asfalt is daar heel slecht.

My dad said at the beginning of the climb that the Coke at the top of the mountain would taste much better than at the bottom and he was definitely right! 😁🚵♂️

Superb climb! Gradual climb with beautiful views of the mountains. On the (narrow) road only cyclists, local traffic and 2x per hour a bus (for which you sometimes have to get off to let them pass).

Schitterende beklimming!

Most beautiful climb I have ever cycled! The road winds up, overlooking the highest mountains in Switzerland. Traffic free, except for a bus (once in half an hour, approximately). Good tarmac, fairly gradual climb. View at the top is beautiful, but also on the way. You also pass a small bird park (free) with owls etc., if you want an interesting stop. Descent is good to both sides.

Do you want to start calm on the first day in Switzerland? Then do this climb as a lap with a start at the Brienzersee. There is a parking lot at the eastern shore of the lake. Cycle along the northern shore (the road along the southern shore is busier and has a very long busy tunnel) to Interlaken. From Interlaken you cycle to Grindelwald. There it is still crowded with tourists, but once you have left Grindelwald and passed the barrier in the forest, you only have to make way for a bus now and then. You have the realm for yourself. Along the way you can even fill your water bottles at such's typical wooden fountain / trough (which was necessary for us because it was then more than 40 degrees). On top is a restaurant with terrace and some tourists. The view is really worth it. The descent to Meiringen is also on a narrow road with not too great road surface and only that one bus. If you are back at the lake, you can take a dip to cool down. The round is about 80 km with over 1,500 altimeters. Nice start of a holiday!
