Climb to Glassier, the dead-end of Valle di Ollomont cycled September 2023.
Considering the first 12 km are identical to the long route to Lago di Place Moulin (see CF.), leave Aosta climbing via SR17 to Porosan with some four hairpin bends, then cycle leisurely on winding road through the villages on the valley flank. Feel free to stay on the main road through Roisan (different CF route) before joining the slightly busier road downhill just before the touristy Valpelline.
After a steep climb (9%) out of this town, leave the main road (towards Lago) at the roundabout on the left to climb the side valley (5km at 8%) without any hairpins with beautiful views on the valley you just crossed.
Passing by the little church of Ollomont provides some false flat followed by 1km of murderous climbing at 10% to Vaud. Afterwards, you reach the end on an almost straight road between alpine meadows flanked by rock massifs (including a waterfall on the left). At least if the traffic lights on the way don't stop you for snow and rock slides.
Road ends at car park in Glassier where narrow rock gorge blocks all traffic unless with backpack and mountain boots.
Practical: no traffic after Ollomont, water supply on the way, reasonable tarmac, no shade.
Beautiful reasonably tough side valley climb that you can cycle along as an extra on your way to or coming from Lago di Place Moulin.
(I did it on the way back)
Nice climb although the first part is a bit crowded with cars's. Climb runs fine and last bit it bites hard. On the way back via the same route small climb of 200mtr a 14%. That should not spoil the fun after the long descent:)
Ascent made after climbing the Great St Bernard
Beautiful climb, not too demanding in a spectacular environment
I also recommend the ascent to the Place Moulin Lake
Val Pelline is located below the summit of the Gran Combin, which is always in front of us as we ascend from Aosta
On the way up you have a splendid panorama over the whole valley
There are fountains along the route and refreshment facilities, including at the finish.
Beautiful video's of your cycling route!
Too bad you did not continue cycling via Vaud to Glassier, another very tough steep section in beautiful natural scenery until the real end of the climb .
