Done on 02/07/2023 during the Tour d'Ortles. A very scenic ascent, coming from Val di Non, you can enjoy the Santa Giustina lake from which you move further and further away amidst beautiful fields full of apples. Near Fondo, another gem is the Smeraldo Lake. Easy climb and very enjoyable pedalling. The descent to Lama/Merano is spectacular: no need for pedals :-) ... read more

A beautiful pass - but not to be compared with the Mendel Pass. The descent towards Merano is more spectacular than the ascent. But perfect for a round trip.

Rode up the Gampenpass after the Mendelpass from Gand. The Gampenpass is a lot easier and does not get steep anywhere. Nice views to the western valley. After the climb, you can descend to Meran.

A gentle and always pedalable climb, more like the ascent of a gentle hill than a mountain pass.
Lots of traffic and fairly limited views of the valley.
Good as a first training ride of the season.

Very crowded, surroundings are nice and the climb is quite easy. I would still skip it because there is very heavy traffic that spoils all the fun. Besides, there are nicer slopes nearby.

Inspired from comments I tried this relaxing climb, that transmits peace and nature. Almost all shaded in the morning, with constant and low slopes. Wasn't it for the summer fast traffic, 4 stars. Descent towards Merano is very enjoyable. Half descent, I turned right to Malles - Andrian - Eppan for a pleasant country descent (new tarmac) and ride between forrests of apples! Very worth climbing if you look for a low effort ride.

Salita facile e pedalabile molto godevole.

Climb is ok. The area is ok. I rode up the Mendel Pass, then from Fondo up the Gampen Pass and back down to Bolzano. Nothing special but still nice.

If you often think while climbing "why does it always have to be so steep", then this is your climb! Enjoying 13 kilometres of beautiful views on a road that is not too busy is what you get with this climb. The kilometres whizz quietly past and it never gets really steep. In the beginning, you do not have many views, but you do pass two very deep gorges. After about five kilometres, the views begin towards the valley in the south. At some places, they have placed benches so that you can enjoy them in an extra relaxed way. On top of the pass, there is a water point to refill your water bottles.
I would like to recommend incorporating this climb into some kind of round trip so that you can also do the descent on the other side. It is really breathtaking. You can see Bolzano in the depths and behind it the mountain massif where the Sella loop is located. Combine that with brand new pitch black asphalt and you do yourself a wonderful half hour gift.
