Foia via Monchique is a climb well worth doing. The climb up to Monchique is a wide and fairly busy road. Regularly from the road you already have a view of the communication station on top of Foia. The climb only gets really nice once you enter Monchique. In February it is a cosy village with lots of terraces and flowers everywhere. From Monchique it is still a serious climb to Foia the evenness of the climb. The views at the top are very rewarding 😀.
Foia via Monchique is een klim die zeer de moeite waard is. De klim tot aan Monchique is een brede en vrij drukke weg. Regelmatig heb je vanaf de weg al uitzicht op het communicatie station bovenop Foia. De beklimming wordt pas echt mooi zodra je Monchique binnen komt. In februari een gezellig dorpje met veel terrasjes en overal bloemen. Van Monchique is het nog een serieuze klim naar Foia de gelijkmatig verloopt. De uitzichten boven zijn zeer de moeite waard 😀.
You have to do it in the Algarve, there is not much choice of other mountains (or passes). The 8 km from Monchique are not particularly strenuous - apart from the heat. But most of the time you don't start in Monchique, but "at the bottom" and have already gained a few metres in altitude and lost a few drops of sweat. I started in Alvor, where I borrowed a racing bike. The view from the top is great, if it's not too hazy. For the descent back to Monchique, you can also ride on the back side of the mountain, but always keep your brakes under control, especially in the bends, because the road quality is quite Portuguese in places, and there are sometimes goats on the road.
Muss man an der Algarve gemacht haben, gibt ja sonst nicht viel Auswahl an anderen Bergen (oder Pässen). Die knapp 8 km von Monchique sind - abgesehen von der Hitze - nicht besonders anstrengend. Aber meistens startet man ja nicht erst in Monchique, sondern "unten" und hat schon ein paar Höhenmeter gesammelt und Schweißtropfen verloren. Ich bin in Alvor gestartet, wo ich mir ein Rennrad geliehen habe. Die Aussicht von oben ist super, wenn es nicht zu diesig ist. Für die Abfahrt zurück nach Monchique kann man auch auf der Rückseite des Berges fahren, aber immer schön die Bremsen im Griff haben, besonders in den Kurven, denn die Straßenqualität ist streckenweise recht portugiesisch, und Ziegen gibt's auch schon mal auf der Straße.
