This ascent to the Fichtenkopf / Niederwalddenkmal is less steep than the alternative from Rüdesheim. The really steep section begins when you turn sharp right at the church in Aulhausen and climb into the forest. The gradient varies slightly, but it remains quite steep up to the Niederwald hunting lodge. The road surface is very good and the road is not too busy.
You should definitely make a detour to the Niederwald monument with the Germania on the right after the top of the pass!

Das richtig steile Stück beginnt, wenn man in Aulhausen an der Kirche scharf rechts abbiegt und in den Wald klettert. Die Steigung variiert etwas, aber bis zum Jagdschloss Niederwald bleibt es ordentlich steil. Der Straßenbelag ist sehr gut und die Straße nicht allzu stark befahren.
Unbedingt sollte man hinter der Passhöhe auf der rechten Seite einen Abstecher zum Niederwalddenkmal mit der Germania machen!
