This ascent to the Fichtenkopf / Niederwalddenkmal is less steep than the alternative from Rüdesheim. The ascent begins picturesquely in Assmannshausen with its old, albeit somewhat outdated, half-timbered houses. The reference to the "Assmannshäuser Höllenberg", a famous vineyard, is an omen for the ascent ;-). The really steep section begins when you turn sharp right at the church in Aulhausen and climb into the forest. The gradient varies slightly, but it remains quite steep up ... read more

The really steep section begins when you turn sharp right at the church in Aulhausen and climb into the forest. The gradient varies slightly, but it remains quite steep up to the Niederwald hunting lodge. The road surface is very good and the road is not too busy.
You should definitely make a detour to the Niederwald monument with the Germania on the right after the top of the pass!
