I started the climb in Tregarth but it's the final section up the dam road (after the gate) that really scores - traffic free apart from, maybe, an occasional service vehicle. Tarmac throughout BUT watch the cattle grids(s) on the descent as they have a raised concrete lip. On the climb, at around 1 km from the gate, there is a junction to the right up to the surge pond - another stunning climb which actually finishes 11 m higher (654m) than the climb to the dam. Stunning views on both climbs.
