This climb, on which many a Tour duel was fought in the past, cycled August 2024.
The terminus has literally been somewhat sidelined as the climb is now used mainly as a long run-up to the landscaped Col de la Loze.
From Brides les Bains, it heads towards Bozel until the turnoff to Courchevel at the roundabout. Through several hairpin turns on wide (busy) road, with beautiful viewpoints and yet +8% sections, it goes up the mountainside through all the villages that make up the large winter sports area.
Courchevel Le Praz (1300m) with its impressive Olympic jumping jumps, Courchevel Village (1550m), Courchevel Moriond (1650m) and finally the highest mundane big Courchevel (1850m).
Signposts to Altiport/Col de la Loze take you hairpin-winding past Prada, Louis Vuiton, Rolex and Sotheby..... establishments to the highest reaches of the village that in summer is one big (re)construction site.
You leave the entrance to the Col de la Loze cycle path on your right to dive under the runway via a tunnel, ending up at the barriers next to the small airport's control tower after another brisk stretch. Arriving on the tarmac is only for the Tour.
End point is 360° nature panorama marred with ski infrastructure.

tip: Traffic congestion cited by almost everyone does ease on weekends due to the elimination of heavy freight traffic. Of course, it remains the only road to the top that everyone uses!

Long no-holds-barred climb to the small airport of the fashionable ski resort.

If this climb were in the Netherlands it would get 1,000 stars. Because there is so much more beautiful in this region I give it three. This climb is a really fine climb towards the Col de la Loze. You cannot avoid this climb. It is a long runner, but you could also call it a wrecker with its 25 kilometres. And make no mistake there are plenty of kilometres that go to 9%. The road can indeed be a bit crowded, but it is wide enough with often a lane for cyclists. If you do the Col de la Loze, Courchevel is also the last time you can forage.

In opposite to other reviews, I was disappointed by this climb and would rather use it as an descent of Col de la Loze, instead of climbing to it.
Because during summer, the whole Courchevel is being renovated, so expect hundrets of trucks and busses passing you on your way up, all driving with maximum load and producing much fumes.

Beautiful climb see the photos's.
The finish is very nice an airport on top of the mountain that is without doubt special. You can also see brilliantly far. Halfway up the climb you also see a ski jump which is more than impressive. The temptation to follow the col de la loze is great but it's worth following altiport and enjoying it there for a while. Through the tunnel and trudge on for a while!

If you can't afford a Russian-style week in the most exclusive resort in the Alps, you can at least enjoy a particularly sporting climb.
During the 1997 Tour de France, the yellow jersey wearer "Ulrich" and the weighted jersey wearer "Virenque" the latter ending up taking it with his finger raised to the sky, as usual.
Starting point in the centre of Moutiers on the banks of the Isère, free parking: Lg 27kms Difference in altitude 1550M
Direction Bozel, Pralognan la Vanoise... by the D915, the road curves and goes up in light slope, it is often dark in this bottom of valley where the sun seldom pierces, to remain on the same road during 10bornes. The first 5km are relatively quiet to warm up then the road rises sharply for a short while before a 2km descent before Brides les Bains.
The ascent resumes, regular and rather sloping, in 3 kilometers you will leave the D915 in a roundabout to turn to the right to attack the laces which go up to the station, the landscapes become splendid as the ascent goes on.
At the 14th kilometre, you pass through the small village of St Bon Tarentaise and at the 16th kilometre Le Praz, a magnificent little resort with its lake reserved for salmon fishing and where it is nice to have a picnic in the summer. If you are not at the coins, take a short detour a few hundred metres to the right at the roundabout at the entrance to Le Praz, to admire the ski jumps dating from the 1992 Albertville games. At the exit of the village the slope becomes quite steep for 2kms until Courchevel 1550, be careful to continue towards Courchevel 1850 6kms further, then in the middle of the resort, turn left towards the Altiport, it will then remain 4kms between 6 and 7%.
At the top at almost 2000M, on the final Parking, the bar of the Altiport allows a small restoration.
Have a good walk and be careful.
